The MLAF Mini-Grant Program supports MLHS Students directly!

About this program…

The MLAF Charter has two parts: One is to support the Alumni Community and Reunions, especially the 50th year Reunions and the Second, is to be sure that MLHS has a continuing successful graduating student body. While it is fun “cutting up a rug” with your classmates during your reunion, nothing give us more pleasure than to support MLHS with Mini-Grants.

On our second anniversary of our charter, we began to learn more and more about needs of a sports team that went unfilled or a teacher who needed supplies that there was no funding for. The fact is that there are many everyday needs in the classroom that there are not grants or goals to meet. We decided that MLAF could fill that need. As an organization we needed to know what the needs of the coaches, teachers and staff were so that we could determine the best way to help the school.

Now, on the last Friday before Final Exams, MLAF provides a spread of Baker Ben’s Doughnuts and Raley’s fresh fruit. We email the MLHS Staff inviting them to breakfast and to fill out brief applications so they can apply for items they need for the following year to support student success in their classrooms. We have purchased numerous books including class sets, for individual reading. We have also purchase various classroom technologies that are essential to having quality lessons. We have paid for transportation to games, entry fees to tournaments, art supplies, musical instrument repairs and sports equipment. It is through the donations of our alumni and our fundraiser events that we are able to do this.

MLHS’s current principal, Clete Purinton, asked to see what the staff had asked for this past June and he was able to take care of some of the Staff’s Grants which allowed MLAF to spread our gifts to more programs. When the Mira Loma Staff has their first meeting in August, we wrap all the “Presents” in Christmas Paper and put them in the meeting room and present them to the recipients at the beginning of the meeting. When the staff walks into the room and sees all the “gifts” wrapped up, they think of Christmas in August. What a great way to kick off the start of school each year!
